Slippery Rock University

rugby club

Slippery Rock University is located in Western Pennsylvania in a small town with a lot to offer. In the Spring of 1981, a couple of guys made the most of it and the Slippery Rock University Men’s Rugby Club was established. The Rock Rugby alumni are a very proud group!  They are affectionately known as SLOBS (Slippery Rock Old Boys).  The SLOBS are an outstanding group who go out of their way to support the current club.

Rock Rugby is a club sport at Slippery Rock University. However, Rock Rugby plays a challenging schedule that includes some colleges where rugby is designated as a varsity sport. Slippery Rock University encourages and cares about club sports and shows their support by contributing a healthy amount of funds to Rock Rugby’s annual budget.

During the 2022 SRU Giving Day, Rock Rugby raised more than of any club at SRU and as a result, received a financial bonus from the SGA and the Rock Rugby Foundation.  This fundraising effort gave Rock Rugby the ability to compete in and travel to, the Men’s Regional Championships in St. Louis, MO.  Rock Rugby also got invited to attend the 7's National Championships in the spring, in New Orleans.  The financial support from the school, alumni and supporters make it possible for Rock Rugby to play a quality schedule and travel to excellent rugby tournaments while representing SRU with pride.

Most of the players who walked on the field this past fall had never played rugby before.  Most of the athletes joined the team as freshmen or sophomores, and simply fell in love with the sport. We encourage anyone who thinks he might be interested in playing rugby, to come to a practice and see how we do things. Rugby just might be a sport for YOU!

Our mission is to teach quality rugby to new and experienced players alike, while growing the great game of rugby. Rock Rugby gives our players fantastic opportunities along the way.  The Rock Rugby players make life-long friends, are introduced to a strong alumni network, and learn the great game of rugby.  Come give it a try!!
